Cuba fights South Africa in Angola
Believe it or not, Cuba and South Africa fought each other in Angola in the 1970s and 1980s. Cuba and South Africa backed opposing sides in Angola’s post-independence civil war. In 1987, the Cuban backed faction (MPLA) launched an offensive to capture UNITA’s main stronghold in the South East corner of Angola. South Africa dispatched troops from Namibia to stop the Angolan offensive, and drove MPLA forces back to the strategic town of Cuito Cuanavale in a dramatic running battle featuring daring armored car attacks. To prevent a total collapse of MPLA forces, Cuba dispatched a huge expeditionary force to Angola. The battle that followed has been described as the Stalingrad of Africa, and indirectly led to the collapse of Apartheid in South Africa. This game simulates the Cuito Cuanavale campaign from the point of initial SADF intervention in August of 1987. You play the SADF/UNITA side. You start off with air superiority, but be careful: Cuban MIGs are on their way! Good luck!
